Can We Meet is a game designed to help people connect on a deeper level, with two tiers:

  1. Let’s Meet for the First Time (for first dates or meeting new friends)
  2. Let’s Meet Again (for parents and children, long-term relationships)

This three-week board game project was created in collaboration with Eva Lu and Alayka Seputra. We developed the gameplay and strategy together, drawing inspiration from our immigrant stories. The game is meant to bridge generational gaps and help you meet anyone, really! It was born from our own struggles to deeply connect with our parents.

I designed the cards, instruction pamphlet, and board layout through laser cutting. Eva assembled and painted the pieces and wrote the instructions, while Alayka modeled the characters in 3D.

Play Testing

As designers, we observed quietly as our peers tried to figure out the game without any external help. I quickly realized how differently people approach a board game and its materials. Person A ignored the instructions and wanted to jump in, while Person B carefully read them and kept referring back to guide Person A.

Ideation

Balance between collaborative and competitive play
Strategy VS Luck
What world do these characters live in?
Who would play this? When?
How would they store it?
What’s the layout of the board? Duration of game?
How many players?

Character Design

This board game’s objective is to meet in the middle. So, we designed characters who would have never met in another world fused together: horsh (horse + brush), stapler cat (staple + cat), hand turkey (hand + turkey), etc...

We built a low fidelity prototype to fine tune our game play through user testing.
